Mössbauer Effect in Iron Pentacarbonyl and Related Carbonyls

Four related iron carbonyls, Fe(CO)/sub 5/, Fe/sub 2/(CO)/sub 9/, Fe/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/, and Fe(CO)/sub 4/I/sub 2/, were used as stationary absorb ers in a Mossbauer experiment in which Co/sup 57/, diffused into metallic chromium, was employed as a source. All four absorbers showed significant resonance absorption of the 14.4-kev gamma -ray of Fe/sup 57/ at 78 deg K. The observed isomer shifts were interpreted in terms of the chemical bonding in transition metal-carbonyl compounds. Mössbauer Effect in Mn _x Fe _3-x O ₄

An analysis was made of the Mossbauer effect of Fe/sup 57/ on several specimens of the Mn/sub x/Fe/sub 3/-/sub x/O/sub 4/ system and a CuFe/su b 2/O/ sub 4/ sample. In the ferrimagnetic state the absorption spectra was obtained for MnFe/sub 2/O/sub 4/. In the paramagnetic state all specimena show two absorption lines; the splittings being due to the quadrupole interaction. The crystal structure of 450 deg C. The quadrupole splittings are almost the same in both phases. The temperature dependence of the isomer shlft of the specimens in the paramagnetic state is also shown. (C.E.S.)

Mössbauer Effect of the Intermetallic Compound UFe ₂

The hyperfine field at the position of Fe⁵⁷ nuclei in UFe₂ was measured by means of the Mossbauer effect. The transmission through the powdered UFe₂ sample of 14.4-kev gamma rays emitted from Co⁵⁷ incorporated in silicon was observed at liquid nitrogen temperature as a function of the velocity of the gamma-ray source. The estimated value of the hyperfine field at room temperature was estimated to be 20 + 8 kilo-oersteds.
