Mean-field theory of spin-liquid states with finite energy gap and topological orders

The mean-field theory of a {ital T}- and {ital P}-symmetric spin-liquid state is developed. The quasiparticle excitations in the spin-liquid state are shown to be spin-1/2 neutral fermions (the spinons) and charge {ital e} spinless bosons (the holons). The spin-liquid state is shown to be characterized by a nontrivial topological order. Although our discussions are based on the mean-field theory, the concept of the topological order and the associated universal properties (e.g., the quantum number of the quasiparticles) are expected to be valid beyond the mean-field theory. We also discuss the dynamical stability of the mean-field theory.

Next-to-leading order spin-orbit and spin(a)-spin(b) Hamiltonians for n gravitating spinning compact objects

We derive the post-Newtonian next-to-leading order conservative spin-orbit and spin(a)-spin(b) gravitational interaction Hamiltonians for arbitrary many compact objects. The spin-orbit Hamiltonian completes the knowledge of Hamiltonians up to and including 2.5 post Newtonian for the general relativistic three-body problem. The new Hamiltonians include highly nontrivial three-body interactions, in contrast to the leading order consisting of two-body interactions only. This may be important for the study of effects like Kozai resonances in mergers of black holes with binary black holes. The derivation was done via two independent methods giving fully consistent results.

Spin-exchange Hamiltonian and topological degeneracies in elemental gadolinium

In this report we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic exchange Hamiltonian of elemental gadolinium. We use neutron scattering to measure the magnon spectrum over the entire Brillouin zone and fit the excitations to a spin wave model to extract the first 26 nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange interactions with rigorously defined uncertainty. We find these exchange interactions to follow RKKY behavior, oscillating from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic as a function of distance. Finally, we discuss the topological features and degeneracies in Gd, and HCP ferromagnets in general. Effective one-body Hamiltonian of two spinning black holes with next-to-next-to-leading order spin-orbit coupling

Building on the recently computed next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) post-Newtonian spin-orbit Hamiltonian for spinning binaries [J. Hartung and J. Steinhoff, arXiv:1104.3079.] we improve the effective-one-body description of the dynamics of two spinning black holes by including NNLO effects in the spin-orbit interaction. The calculation that is presented extends to NNLO the next-to-leading order spin-orbit Hamiltonian computed in [T. Damour, P. Jaranowski, and G. Schaefer, Phys. Rev. D 78, 024009 (2008).].
