The authors describe their ongoing work on, and future plans for, searches in bulk matter for fractional charge elementary particles and very massive elementary particles. Their primary interest is in searching for such particles that may have been produced in the early universe and may be found in the more primeval matter available in the solar system: meteorites, material from the moon's surface, and certain types of ancient terrestrial rocks. A cosmic ray telescope used to search for massive and/or fractionally charged particles

A telescope used to search for massive and/or fractionally charged particles in the cosmic radiation is described. The telescope uses plastic scintillators (for ionization and time-of-flight measurements), wide gap spark chambers (to fix particle trajectories) and lead/iron absorbers (for range measurements). Timing and ionization measurements are recorded using a fast oscilloscope. Measurements are recorded for slow particles (0.2 c<0.55 c) only. The accuracies of the measurements are such that charge measurements deduced from the speed and ionization measurements are accurate to 0.05 e (one s.d.). Finally, the construction, calibration and operation of the telescope are described.

Search for massive, long-lived, fractionally charged particles produced by 300-GeV protons

A search has been made for massive, long-lived, weakly interacting particles of fractional charge that could be produced by 300-GeV protons striking an aluminum target. The search was most sensitive to particles with a lifetime of about 100 ..mu..sec. These particles would have come to rest in the Caltech neutrino detector that was located halfway down the muon shield, and if they were massive enough and decayed into at least 5 GeV of visible energy in the calorimeter, they could have been detected. On the fraction of dark matter in charged massive particles (CHAMPs)

From various cosmological, astrophysical and terrestrial requirements, we derive conservative upper bounds on the present-day fraction of the mass of the Galactic dark matter (DM) halo in charged massive particles (CHAMPs). If dark matter particles are neutral but decay lately into CHAMPs, the lack of detection of heavy hydrogen in sea water and the vertical pressure equilibrium in the Galactic disc turn out to put the most stringent bounds.
