The temperature distribution and the power threshold during the catastrophic optical degradation are calculated within the framework of the developed model of the COD of the output facet in high-power single-transverse-mode diode lasers. Comparison of the calculation results and the experiment show the model adequacy. The contribution of different physical mechanisms into the heating of the laser output facet is analysed. It is shown that the model under study can help to develop the method for predicting the laser lifetime by the accelerated ageing tests. (lasers)

Double scaling limits and airy functions for {ital O}({ital N}) vector sigma models with elementary catastrophes or the catastrophe {ital X}{sub 9}

One and two vector sigma models are defined that possess catastrophes in their action. Each catastrophe defines a double scaling limit at {ital N}{r_arrow}{infinity}. The manipulation of planar objects using linear fences is of interest in robotics and parts feeding applications. The global behavior of such systems can be characterized graphically using Brost's push stability diagram (PSD). Previously, the authors have shown specifically under what conditions this representation undergoes qualitative, topological transitions corresponding to globally distinct behavioral regimes. Thermal transport catastrophe and the tokamak edge density limit

Experiments on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511 (1994)] have demonstrated the existence of a density limit that appears to be caused not by radiation but by perpendicular heat convection in the scrape-off layer (SOL). The present paper shows that the collisionality dependence of the blob model provides a plausible explanation for this convective density limit under certain conditions. Comminuted Particles Originating from Catastrophic Failure of a Glass Bar
