Spectrum imaging (SI) methods are displacing traditional spot analyses as the predominant paradigm for spectroscopic analysis with electron beam instrumentation. The multivariate nature of SI provides clear advantages for qualitative analysis of multiphase specimens relative to traditional gray-scale images acquired with non-spectroscopic signals, where different phases with similar average atomic number may exhibit the same intensity. An ongoing study is focused on understanding the hydrology and geochemistry of three contaminated, perennial, semi-arid zone springs at a high explosives production facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory, in northern New Mexico, USA. Springflow time series were examined using singular spectrum analysis (SSA) to identify the important time-scales affecting flow in the springs. SSA results suggest that springflow has two dominant patterns: a series of low-frequency modes which follow the seasonal and longer-term climate conditions at the site, and a large number of higher frequency modes which display the characteristic ''red noise'' spectrum related to local, short-term weather conditions.more »« less

Power spectrum analysis (PSA) is a fast, non-destructive, sensitive method for examining commercial off-the-shelf ( COTS ) electronic components. These features make PSA attractive for both component screening and surveillance in support of component reliability efforts. Current analysis methods limit the utility of PSA due to the need to manually examine the results of analysis to identify anomalous parts. This study demonstrates the development and application of a workflow to automate the screening of COTS electronic components. Multivariate statistical analysis of low-voltage EDS spectrum images

Whereas energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) has been used for compositional analysis in the scanning electron microscope for 30 years, the benefits of using low operating voltages for such analyses have been explored only during the last few years. This paper couples low-voltage EDS with two other emerging areas of characterization: spectrum imaging and multivariate statistical analysis. The specimen analyzed for this study was a finished Intel Pentium processor, with the polyimide protective coating stripped off to expose the final active layers.
