Auger Test of the Cen A Model of Highest Energy Cosmic Rays

If, as recently proposed by Farrar and Piran, CenA is the source of cosmic rays detected above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min cutoff, neutrons are {approx}140 more probable than protons to be observed along its line of sight. This is because the proton flux is rendered nearly isotropic by O({mu}G) intergalactic magnetic fields. With the anticipated aperture of the Southern Auger Observatory, one may expect on the order of 2neutron events/ year above 10{sup 20} eV in the line of sight of CenA.

Most theoretical approaches used in nuclear astrophysics to model the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements incorporate the so-called statistical model in order to describe the excitation and decay properties of atomic nuclei. One of the basic assumptions of this model is the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and the related concept of so-called photon strength functions to describe γ-ray transition probabilities. We present a novel experimental approach that allows for the first time to experimentally determine the photon strength function simultaneously in two independent ways by a unique combination of quasi-monochromatic photon beams and a newly implemented γ–γ coincidence setup. This technique does not assume a priori the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and sets a benchmark in terms of the detection sensitivity for measuring decay properties of photo-excited states below the neutron separation energy. The data for the spherical off-shell nucleus ¹²⁸Te were obtained for γ-ray beam-energy settings between 3 MeV and 9 MeV in steps of 130 keV for the lower beam energies and in steps of up to 280 keV for the highest beam settings. We present a quantitative analysis on the consistency of the derived photon strength function with the Brink–Axel hypothesis. The data clearly demonstrate a discrepancy of up to a factor of two between the photon strength functions extracted from the photoabsorption and photon emission process, respectively. In addition, we observe that the photon strength functions are not independent of the excitation energy, as usually assumed. Thus, we conclude, that the Brink–Axel hypothesis is not strictly fulfilled in the excitation-energy region below the neutron separation threshold (S_n = 8.78 MeV) for the studied case of ¹²⁸Te.

Update on the correlation of the highest energy cosmic rays with nearby extragalactic matter

Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory through 31 August 2007 showed evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin energy threshold, 6 x 10{sup 19} eV. The anisotropy was measured by the fraction of arrival directions that are less than 3.1{sup o} from the position of an active galactic nucleus within 75 Mpc (using the Veron-Cetty and Veron 12th catalog). Plasmoid Impacts on Neutron Stars and Highest Energy Cosmic Rays

Particle acceleration by electrostatic polarization fields that arise in plasmas streaming across magnetic fields is discussed as a possible acceleration mechanism of highest energy ({approx}>10{sup 20} eV) cosmic rays. Specifically, plasmoids arising in planetoid impacts onto neutron star magnetospheres are considered. We find that such impacts at plausible rates may account for the observed flux and energy spectrum of the highest energy cosmic rays.

TeV and Superheavy Particles from Supersymmetric Topological Defects, the Extragalactic {ital {gamma}} -ray Background, and the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays

Cosmic topological defects in a wide class of supersymmetric theories can simultaneously be sources of Higgs bosons of mass{approximately}supersymmetry breaking scale{approximately}TeV , as well as superheavy gauge bosons of mass{approximately}{eta}{gt}1 TeV , {eta} being the gauge symmetry breaking scale. Decay of these Higgs and gauge bosons may contribute significantly to the extragalactic diffuse {gamma} -ray background (EDGRB) above {approximately}10 GeV and explain the highest energy cosmic ray (HECR) flux above {approximately}10{sup 11} GeV , respectively.
