False-vacuum decay induced by a two-particle collision in two dimensions

We consider two-dimensional scalar theories with two vacuum states. The vacuum built on the local minimum of the field potential (the so-called false one) is known to decay spontaneously through quantum tunneling. A collision of two particles at energy {radical}{ital s} is shown to increase exponentially the decay probability like a single particle of mass {radical}{ital s} .

On the particle-induced decay of a metastable vacuum

In a two-dimensional theory we calculate the decay probability of a metastable (false) vacuum, induced by the presence of a single particle (a boson or a fermion), as well as by a two-particle collision. We show that the mass of the particles leads to an effective catalysis of the decay, while the kinetic energy of the colliding particles does not increase the decay probability. We give a physical interpretation of this result, which makes it possible to extend the result to theories in a larger number of dimensions.
False vacuum decay induced by particle collisions

The semiclassical formalism for numerical calculation of the rate of tunneling transitions induced by N particles with total energy E of order or higher than the height of the barrier is developed. The formalism is applied to the induced false vacuum decay in the massive four-dimensional {minus}{lambda}{phi}{sup 4} model. The decay rate, as a function of E and N, is calculated numerically in the range 0.4{approx_lt}E/E{sub sph}{approx_lt}3.5 and 0.25{approx_lt}N/N{sub sph}{approx_lt}1.0, where E{sub sph} and N{sub sph} are the energy and the number of particles in the analogue of the sphaleron configuration. Thresholds for laser-induced ion formation from aerosols in a vacuum using ultraviolet and vacuum-ultraviolet laser wavelengths

The minimum laser fluence required for the formation of ions from aerosol particles in a vacuum as a function of a number of parameters has been investigated. Although the influences of various particle properties are complex, the threshold energy density does depend on light absorption and lattice energy. Ionization thresholds were lower at 193 and 157 nm than at 248 nm. The range in ion formation thresholds for different types of particles also decreased as the laser wavelength decreased, consistent with the fact that all the substances used are likely to absorb vacuum-ultraviolet radiation fairly strongly.
