One of the most appealing questions in astroparticle physics concerns the nature of the Dark Matter (DM) particles and their possible interaction with ordinary matter. In order to find a solution to such problem, a double phase liquid-gas Xenon Time Projection Chamber has been proposed and built as a suitable detector for the direct detection of DM in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). XENON10/100 dark matter constraints in comparison with CoGeNT and DAMA: Examining the L{sub eff} dependence

We consider the compatibility of DAMA/LIBRA, CoGeNT, XENON10 and XENON100 results for spin-independent (SI) dark matter weakly interacting massive particles, particularly at low masses ({approx}10 GeV), assuming a standard dark matter halo. The XENON bounds depend on the scintillation efficiency factor L{sub eff} for which there is considerable uncertainty. Thus we consider various extrapolations for L{sub eff} at low energy. With the L{sub eff} measurements we consider, XENON100 results are found to be insensitive to the low-energy extrapolation. Results from the XENON10 and the Race to Detect Dark Matter with Noble Liquids

Detectors based on liquid noble gases have the potential to revolutionize the direct search for WIMP dark matter. The XENON10 experiment, of which I am a member, has recently announced the results from it's first data run and is now the leading WIMP search experiment. This and other experiments using xenon, argon and neon have the potential to rapidly move from the current kg-scale target mass to the ton scale and well beyond. This should allow a (nearly) definitive test or discovery of dark matter if it is in the form of weakly interacting massive particles.

It has been suggested that dark matter particles which scatter inelastically from detector target nuclei could explain the apparent incompatibility of the DAMA modulation signal (interpreted as evidence for particle dark matter) with the null results from CDMS-II and XENON10. Among the predictions of inelastically interacting dark matter are a suppression of low-energy events, and a population of nuclear recoil events at higher nuclear recoil equivalent energies.
