We study the photon-triggered light and heavy meson production in both p+p and A+A collisions. We find that a parton energy loss approach that successfully describes inclusive hadron attenuation in nucleus-nucleus reactions at RHIC can simultaneously describe well the experimentally determined photon-triggered light hadron fragmentation functions. Using the same framework, we generalize our formalism to study photon-triggered heavy meson production. We find that the nuclear modification of photon-tagged heavy meson fragmentation functions in A+A collision is very different from that of the photon-tagged light hadron case. Results of investigations concerning a theory of meson production based on the two fire balls models are reported. Calculations concerning the reaction cross section in N-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions are also reported along with experimental results on meson production and fragmentation induced by heavy cosmic-ray primaries. (J.R.D.) Two values for the flux of the hydrogen component in the primary cosmic radiation have been measured. The first one was over Guam in the Marianas Islands, geomagnetic latitude lambda = 0 deg . Jet Quenching in the Direction Opposite to a Tagged Photon in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

We point out that events associated with large {ital E}{sub {ital T}} direct photons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be used to study jet energy loss in dense matter. In such events, the {ital p}{sub {ital T}} spectrum of charged hadrons from jet fragmentation in the direction opposite to the tagged photon is estimated to be well above the background which can be reliably subtracted at moderately large {ital p}{sub {ital T}}. Here, vector-boson-tagged jet production in collisions of heavy nuclei opens new opportunities to study parton shower formation and propagation in strongly interacting matter. It has been argued to provide a golden channel that can constrain the energy loss of jets in the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy ion reactions. Diffractive production of vector mesons in high-energy photon-photon collisions

We examine here the energy dependence of the production of vector mesons in photon-photon collisions based on a model applied earlier to the calculation of diffractive photoproduction cross sections with a derived form of the vector-dominance model. We observe here that production of heavy vector mesons is considerably suppressed.
