A turbulent energy cascade has been recently identified in high-latitude solar wind data samples by using a Yaglom-like relation. However, analogous scaling law, suitably modified to take into account compressible fluctuations, has been observed in a much more extended fraction of the same data set recorded by the Ulysses spacecraft. Thus, it seems that large scale density fluctuations, despite their low amplitude, play a major role in the basic scaling properties of turbulence. The compressive turbulent cascade, moreover, seems to be able to supply the energy needed to account for the local heating of the non-adiabatic solar wind.

Cascade and intermittency model for turbulent compressible self-gravitating matter and self-binding phase-space density fluctuations

A simple physical model which describes the dynamics of turbulence and the spectrum of density fluctuations in compressible, self-gravitating matter and self-binding, phase-space density fluctuations is presented. The two systems are analogous to each other in that each tends to self-organize into hierarchical structures via the mechanism of Jeans collapse. The model, the essential physical ingredient of which is a cascade constrained by the physical requirement of quasivirialization, is shown to exhibit interesting geometric properties such as intrinsic intermittency and anisotropy.

CONSERVATIVE CASCADE OF KINETIC ENERGY IN COMPRESSIBLE TURBULENCE

The physical nature of compressible turbulence is of fundamental importance in a variety of astrophysical settings. We investigate the question: 'At what scales does the mechanism of pressure-dilatation operate?' and present the first direct evidence that mean kinetic energy cascades conservatively beyond a transitional 'conversion' scale range despite not being an invariant of the dynamics. We use high-resolution 1024{sup 3} subsonic and transonic simulations. Direct energy cascade in two-dimensional compressible quantum turbulence

We numerically study two-dimensional quantum turbulence with a Gross-Pitaevskii model. With the energy initially accumulated at large scale, quantum turbulence with many quantized vortex points is generated. Due to the lack of enstrophy conservation in this model, direct energy cascade with a Kolmogorov-Obukhov energy spectrum E(k){proportional_to}k{sup -5/3} is observed, which is quite different from two-dimensional incompressible classical turbulence in the decaying case. Energy Cascade Rate in Compressible Fast and Slow Solar Wind Turbulence

Estimation of the energy cascade rate in the inertial range of solar wind turbulence has been done so far mostly within incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) theory. Here, we go beyond that approximation to include plasma compressibility using a reduced form of a recently derived exact law for compressible, isothermal MHD turbulence.
