The (d,n) reaction has been studied with targets of ⁹Be, ¹¹B, ¹³C, ^14,15N, and 19F at E_d = 16MeV using a deuterated liquid-scintillator array. Advanced spectral unfolding techniques with accurately measured scintillator response functions were employed to extract neutron energy spectra without the need for long-path neutron time-of-flight. An analysis of the proton-transfer data at forward angles to the ground states of the final nuclei, using finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation analysis with common bound-state, global, and local optical-model parameter sets, yields a set of self-consistent spectroscopic factors. First Direct Measurement of ${}^{12}C ({}^{12}C, n) {}^{23}{Mg}$ at Stellar Energies

Neutrons produced by the carbon fusion reaction ¹²C(¹²C,n)²³Mg play an important role in stellar nucleosynthesis. However, past studies have shown large discrepancies between experimental data and theory, leading to an uncertain cross section extrapolation at astrophysical energies. Here in this paper, we present the first direct measurement that extends deep into the astrophysical energy range along with a new and improved extrapolation technique based on experimental data from the mirror reaction ¹²C(¹²C,p)²³Na .
