We use simple analytic considerations and a Monte Carlo calculation of nucleons in a box to argue that the use of Jastrow functions as short-range correlators in the commonly employed two-body cluster approximation causes significant errors in the matrix elements for double-{beta} decay. The Jastrow approach appears to agree with others, however, if many-body clusters are included. A careful treatment of the charge-changing analog of the nuclear pair density shows, in addition, that differences between the unitary correlation operator method and Brueckner methods for treating short-range correlations in double-{beta} decay are less significant than suggested by previous work.

Diode laser pumped blue-light source at 473 nm using intracavity frequency doubling of a 946 nm Nd:YAG laser

Using intracavity frequency doubling of a diode laser pumped 946 nm Nd:YAG laser, 3.1 mW of blue output power at 473 nm was obtained. Angle-tuned, type-I frequency doubling in potassium niobate was employed, and both the KNbO/sub 3/ and Nd:YAG crystals were used at room temperature.

Efficient blue emission from an intracavity-doubled 946-nm Nd:YAG laser

We report the first observation to our knowledge of coherent emission at 473 nm from an intracavity-doubled Nd:YAG microlaser. The d/sub 32/ coefficient of potassium niobate was used in a 90-deg, temperature-tuned, Type I phase-matching configuration to generate the second harmonic of the 946-nm intracavity field. Output powers in excess of 5 mW at optical conversion efficiencies of approximately 2% have been observed with dye-laser pumping at 588 nm.

Room-temperature, continuous-wave, 946-nm Nd:YAG laser pumped by laser-diode arrays and intracavity frequency doubling to 473 nm

We report the use of GaAlAs laser-diode arrays to pump a cw Nd:YAG laser operating on the 946-nm /sup 4/F/sub 3/2/..-->../sup 4/I/sub 9/2/ transition. At room temperature, the lasing threshold was reached with 58 mW of absorbed pump power, and, with 175 mW of absorbed pump power, 42 mW of output power at 946 nm was obtained in a TEM/sub 00/ mode by using 0.7% output coupling. In addition, pumping with an infrared dye laser operating in a pure TEM/sub 00/ mode was used to investigate the effects of reabsorption loss that are characteristic of the 946-nm laser transition.
