The Green-Kubo equation relates the macroscopic stress-stress correlation function to a liquid's viscosity. The concept of the atomic-level stresses allows the macroscopic stress-stress correlation function in the equation to be expressed in terms of the space-time correlations among the atomic-level stresses. Molecular dynamics studies show surprisingly long spatial extension of stress-stress correlations and also longitudinal and transverse waves propagating in liquids over ranges which could exceed the system size. The results reveal that the range of propagation of shear waves corresponds to the range of distances relevant for viscosity. Thus our results show that viscosity is a fundamentally nonlocal quantity.more »« less

The effect of shear rate and shear stress on viscosity determinations at low temperatures for engine oils

The viscosity of engine lubricants was measured at multiple shear rates by a unique Scanning Brookfield apparatus. These oils included both pumpability reference oils (PRO) and a selection of today's commercial multigrade oils. It was found that the viscosity of flow-limited oils remained constant when the shear rate decreased. Oils with air-binding properties exhibited an increase in viscosity with decreasing shear rate. The magnitude of a change in slope of the temperature/viscosity profile was found to suggest the degree of air-binding character of an oil. Non-Newtonian viscosity of atomic fluids in shear and shear-free flows

Simple shear and various simple shear-free flows with constant traceless velocity gradient are simulated at the microscopic level for an atomic fluid at a single state point. The dependence of the viscosity upon the strain rate is obtained for each specific flow and analyzed on the basis of the retarded motion expansion of the nonequilibrium pressure tensor. Within the investigated range of strain rate, the pressure and the internal energy follow a linear behavior in terms of the second scalar invariant of the strain-rate tensor which, as expected by symmetry, is common to all flows.

Viscosity, granular-temperature, and stress calculations for shearing assemblies of inelastic, frictional disks

Employing nonequilibrium molecular-dynamics methods the effects of two energy loss mechanisms on viscosity, stress, and granular-temperature in assemblies of nearly rigid, inelastic frictional disks undergoing steady-state shearing are calculated. Energy introduced into the system through forced shearing is dissipated by inelastic normal forces or through frictional sliding during collisions resulting in a natural steady-state kinetic energy density (granular-temperature) that depends on the density and shear rate of the assembly and on the friction and inelasticity properties of the disks.
