Muon spin relaxation study of spin dynamics in the extended kagome systems ${YBaCo}_{4} O_{7 + δ} (δ = 0, 0.1)$

Here, we present muon spin relaxation (μSR) measurements of the extended kagome systems YBaCo₄O_7+δ (δ = 0,0.1), comprising two interpenetrating kagome sublattice of Co(I)³⁺ (S = 3/2) and a triangle sublattice of Co(II)²⁺ (S = 2). The zero- and longitudinal-field μ SR spectra of the stoichiometric compound YBaCo₄O₇ unveil that the triangular subsystem orders at TN = 101 K. In contrast, the muon spin relaxation rate pertaining to the kagome subsystem shows persistent spin dynamics down to T = 20 K and then a sublinear decrease λ(T ) ~ T^0.66(5) on cooling towards T = 4 K. Low-temperature magnetic and structural behavior of the extended Kagome system YBaCo₄O₇ has been studied by single-crystal neutron diffraction and high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction. Long-range magnetic ordering associated with a structural transition from orthorhombic Pbn2₁ to monoclinic P2₁ symmetry has been found at T₁ ~ 100 K. The interplay between the structural and magnetic degrees of freedom indicates that the degeneracy of the magnetic ground state, present in the orthorhombic phase, is lifted through a strong magnetoelastic coupling, as observed in other frustrated systems. Gigantic magnetic-field-induced polarization and magnetoelectric coupling in a ferrimagnetic oxide CaBaCo $_{4}$ O $_{7}$

Below Tc, the single-crystal study of CaBaCo40,, a noncollinear ferrimagnet (Tc = 64 K) with a polar orthorhombic space group (Pbn21) between 4 and 293 K, shows a large change inthe electric polarization along its c axis reaching !!iP = 17 mC/m2 at 10 K. At 62.5 K, a magnetic-field-driven giant variation inpolarization P(9 T) - P(O T) = 8 mC/m2 is observed. Moreover, the present magnetoelectric measurements are fully consistent withthe m'm2' magnetic point group. This ferrimagnetic oxide, which belongs to the "114" structural family, opens an avenue for the search for new magnetoelectrics.

Novel Strongly Spin-Orbit Coupled Quantum Dimer Magnet: ${Yb}_{2} {Si}_{2} O_{7}$

The quantum dimer magnet (QDM) is the canonical example of quantum magnetism. The QDM state consists of entangled nearest-neighbor spin dimers and often exhibits a field-induced triplon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) phase. We report on a new QDM in the strongly spin-orbit coupled, distorted honeycomb-lattice material Yb₂Si₂O₇. Our single crystal neutron scattering, specific heat, and ultrasound velocity measurements reveal a gapped singlet ground state at zero field with sharp, dispersive excitations.
