Here, the spin transitions in the fractional quantum Hall effect provide a direct measure of the tiny energy differences between differently spin-polarized states, and thereby serve as an extremely sen- sitive test of the quantitative accuracy of the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect, and, in particular, of the role of Landau-level mixing in lifting the particle-hole symmetry. We report on an accurate quantitative study of this physics, evaluating the effect of Landau-level mixing in a nonperturbative manner using a fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo method. Exact Quantization of the Even-Denominator Fractional Quantum Hall State at {nu} =5/2 Landau Level Filling Factor

We report ultralow temperature experiments on the obscure fractional quantum Hall effect at Landau level filling factor {nu}=5/2 in a very high-mobility specimen of {mu}=1.7{times}10{sup 7} cm {sup 2}/Vthinsp s . We achieve an electron temperature as low as {approximately}4 mK , where we observe vanishing R{sub xx} and, for the first time, a quantized Hall resistance, R{sub xy}=h/(5/2)e{sup 2} to within 2thinspthinspppm. R{sub xy} at the neighboring odd-denominator states {nu}=7/3 and 8/3 is also quantized.
