The widths of the interstitial loop denuded zone (DZ) along grain boundaries were examined for 3C-SiC irradiated at 1010-1380 C by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in an effort to obtain the activation energy of interstitial migration. Denuded-zone widths as small as 17 nm were observed below 1130 C, indicating that a substantial population of 'TEM invisible' voids of diameter <0.7 significantly contribute to interstitial annihilation. The energetics and length scales associated with the interaction between point defects (vacancies and self-interstitial atoms) and grain boundaries in bcc Fe was explored. Molecular statics simulations were used to generate a grain boundary structure database that contained {approx}170 grain boundaries with varying tilt and twist character. Then, vacancy and self-interstitial atom formation energies were calculated at all potential grain boundary sites within 15 {angstrom} of the boundary. A detailed analysis of the diffusion fluxes near and at grain boundaries of irradiated Fe–Cr–Ni alloys, induced by preferential atom-vacancy and atom-interstitial coupling, is presented. The diffusion flux equations were based on the Perks model formulated through the linear theory of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The preferential atom-vacancy coupling was described by the mobility model, whereas the preferential atom-interstitial coupling was described by the interstitial binding model. The composition dependence of the thermodynamic factor was modeled using the CALPHAD approach. Various correlations of fractional macroscopic and lattice changes in neutron irradiated graphites are used to distinguish interstitial-sink reactions from interstitialvacancy reactions. The irradiation temperature dependence of the macroscopic expansion in the a'' direction is shown to be the same as the irradiation temperature dependence of the lattice expansion in the c'' direction and appears to reflect properties of interstitials. a'' spacing changes at different irradiation temperatures indicate that the rate of change of the lattice parameter in the a'' direction may be independent of irradiation temperature for low doses.
