The microstructure of icosahedral Al(Mn) in melt-quenched surface alloys has been characterized with TEM. Single-phase alloys with 20 at. % Mn show angular misorientations (up to {similar to}7{degree}) across internal boundaries radiating from the nucleation centers of grains. Lowering the Mn content results in fcc Al at grain boundaries and between branches of the icosahedral grains; the presence of Al-rich liquid around growing grains apparently eliminates the misorientations seen with 20 at. % Mn. The grains have a dense distribution of dislocation-like defects, but have sufficient orientational order to exhibit well--defined diffraction contours. Diffuse Scattering and Phason Fluctuations in the Zn-Mg-Sc Icosahedral Quasicrystal and Its Zn-Sc Periodic Approximant

We report on the absolute scale measurement of the x-ray diffuse scattering in the ZnMgSc icosahedral quasicrystal and its periodic approximant. Whereas the diffuse scattering in the approximant is purely accounted for by thermal diffuse scattering, an additional signal is observed in the quasicrystal. It is related to phason fluctuations as indicated by its Q{sub per}{sup 2} dependence. Moreover, when compared to previous measurements carried out on the i-AlPdMn phase, we find that the amount of diffuse scattering is smaller in the i-ZnMgSc phase, in agreement with larger phason elastic constants in this phase. Phason elasticity in entropic quasicrystals

The equilibrium quasicrystal phase of a two-dimensional two-component Lennard-Jones atomic system and two different ensembles of random tilings (binary and uncontrained) are analyzed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the quasicrystal phase in the atomic system is well described by the random-tiling model. Despite the nonzero configurational entropy density, the phason fluctuations are found not to destroy the quasi-long-range translational order in this phase, in agreement with conjectured square-gradient phason elasticity. Nearly identical, temperature-independent, reduced, phason elastic constants are determined in all three cases.

Phason elasticity of a three-dimensional quasicrystal: A transfer-matrix method

We introduce a transfer-matrix method for calculating the thermodynamic properties of random-tiling models of quasicrystals in any number of dimensions, and describe how it may be used to calculate the phason elastic properties of these models, which are related to experimental measurables such as phason Debye-Waller factors, and diffuse scattering wings near Bragg peaks. Entropic formation of a thermodynamically stable colloidal quasicrystal with negligible phason strain

Quasicrystals have been discovered in a variety of materials ranging from metals to polymers. Yet, why and how they form is incompletely understood. In situ transmission electron microscopy of alloy quasicrystal formation in metals suggests an error-and-repair mechanism, whereby quasiperiodic crystals grow imperfectly with phason strain present, and only perfect themselves later into a high-quality quasicrystal with negligible phason strain. The growth mechanism has not been investigated for other types of quasicrystals, such as dendrimeric, polymeric, or colloidal quasicrystals.
