The length scale of stress domain patterns formed at solid surfaces is usually calculated using isotropic elasticity theory. Because this length depends exponentially on elastic constants; deviations between isotropic and anisotropic elasticity can lead to large errors. Another inaccuracy of isotropic elasticity theory is that it neglects the dependence of elastic relaxations on stripe orientation. To remove these inaccuracies; we calculate the energy of striped domain patterns using anisotropic elasticity theory for an extensive set of surfaces encountered in experimental studies of self-assembly. Self-organized nanocrystalline stripe patterns generated during early crystallization of a nonequilibrium metallic glass

The author reports a unique early-stage (the crystallized volume fraction {approx}0.20) self-organized nanocrystalline stripe pattern phenomenon that nanoscale phase separation and nucleation simultaneously work together, representing a type that had never been previously observed in a metastable alloy solid. The first observation of mesoscopic self-organized crystallization showed that self-organization is not limited to the case of organic matter, thus potentially offering an insight into the mechanism of the nonequilibrium (nano)crystallization of metallic glasses.

Elasticity driven self-organization of polarons

We use a strain description to couple long-range elastic fields adiabatically to electronic density to describe the behavior of a quantum particle in an elastic medium. We show that in this generalization of the Holstein polaron problem, a bound polaronic state results with strong long-range angular dependence in the elastic fields, but a localized electronic core. The deformation of the elastic fields creates an anisotropic, indirect interaction between polarons extending to large distances. For a given density of polarons, this interaction favors the formation of strings of polarons in preferred directions.

Abstract The intertwining of strands into 3D spirals is ubiquitous in biology, enabling functions from information storage to maintenance of cell structure and directed locomotion. In synthetic systems, entwined fibers can provide superior mechanical properties and act as artificial muscle or structural reinforcements.
