We present measurements of Stark interference in the 6{sup 1}S{sub 0}{yields}6{sup 3}P{sub 1} transition in {sup 199}Hg, a process whereby a static electric field E mixes magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole couplings into an electric dipole transition, leading to E-linear energy shifts similar to those produced by a permanent atomic electric dipole moment (EDM). The measured interference amplitude, a{sub SI}=(a{sub M1}+a{sub E2})=(5.8{+-}1.5)x10{sup -9} (kV/cm){sup -1}, agrees with relativistic, many-body predictions and confirms that earlier central-field estimates are a factor of 10 too large. Laser-microwave double resonance frequency standard using {sup 199}Hg{sup +} ions in a cryogenic linear trap

We have previously reported experiments using a linear rf trap to store laser-cooled {sup 199}Hg{sup +} ions. Trapping multiple ions increases the signal-to-noise ratio; yet all ions have equally low second-order Doppler shifts if they are confined along the nodal center line of a linear trap. In such an environment, the 40.5 GHz ground-state hyperfine transition in {sup 199}Hg{sup +} is a candidate for an extremely accurate and stable microwave frequency standard. A study of the 6/sup 3/P/sub 1/ level of isotope pairs of Mg by magnetic resonance methods leads to the determination of a coherence time'' which is much longer than the duration of the life of the level. At very low vapor densities, the coherence time'' approaches the level lifetime. Experimental resilts verified that the coherence time'' is dependent only on the number of diffusing atoms and on the obseved hypefiine level and that it approaches the level lifetime. (J.S.R.)

The nuclear orientations of Hg/sup 201/ and Hg/sup 199/ were obtained by optical pumping. The magnetic moments mu /sub 201/ and mu /sub 199/ were measured. Their ratio mu /sub 201/ mu /sub 199/=1.10741 plus or minus 1) indicates the existence of a hfs anomaly. (tr-auth)
