The rp-process waiting-point nucleus ⁶⁸Se and its astrophysical implications

Precise mass measurements of nuclei along the N=Z line are important input parameters for simulations of the rp-process. Of particular interest is the mass of the ⁶⁸Se rp-process waiting point nucleus for determining the possibility of a two-proton capture branch bypassing its slow beta decay. The mass of ⁶⁸Se was measured via the beta decay endpoint. Evaluations of proton separation energies based on the measured mass lead to the conclusion that ⁶⁸Se is indeed a waiting point for the rp process.

Waiting points in the astrophysical rp process: How unbound are {sup 69}Br and {sup 73}Rb?

One of the key uncertainties in our understanding of the astrophysical rp process is the extent to which even-even N=Z nuclei such as {sup 68}Se and {sup 72}Kr act as waiting points in the process because of the next nucleus in the proton-capture chain being proton unbound. For these specific cases, much of the argument is based on the nonobservation of {sup 69}Br and {sup 73}Rb following projectile fragmentation. The first direct measurement of the proton separation energy, S p , for the proton-unbound nucleus 69Br is reported. Of interest is the exponential dependence of the 2 p-capture rate on S p which can bypass the 68Se waiting-point in the astrophysical rp process. An analysis of the observed proton decay spectrum is given in terms of the 69Se mirror nucleus and the influence of S p is explored within the context of a single-zone X-ray burst model.
