Do Gluons Carry Half of the Nucleon Momentum?

We examine the conventional picture that gluons carry about half of the nucleon momentum in the asymptotic limit. We show that this large fraction is due to an unsuitable definition of the gluon momentum in an interacting theory. If defined in a gauge-invariant and consistent way, the asymptotic gluon momentum fraction is computed to be only about one-fifth. This result suggests that the asymptotic limit of the nucleon spin structure should also be reexamined. A possible experimental test of our finding is discussed in terms of novel parton distribution functions.

Gluon Polarisation in the Nucleon from High Transverse Momentum Hadron Pairs at COMPASS

The main goal of the COMPASS spin physics programme is the measurement of the helicity contribution of the gluons, {delta}G/G, to the nucleon spin. It is determined from the longitudinal spin asymmetry in the scattering of 160 GeV polarised muons off a polarised LiD target. The new analysis and new COMPASS {delta}G/G result obtained from high transverse momentum hadron pairs for Q{sup 2}>1(GeV/c){sup 2} is presented. The weighted method based on a Neural Network approach is discussed. The result of {delta}G/G 0.08{+-}0.10(stat){+-}0.05(syst)disfavors a large positive contribution to the nucleon spin for a gluon momentum fraction around 0.08 and agrees withmore »« less

Quark and Gluon Angular Momentum in the Nucleon

Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, are exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when the target and/or quark is transversely polarized. From this deformation, we present an intuitive derivation of the Ji relation. In a scalar diquark model and in QED, we compare the Ji and Jaffe-Manohar decompositions of the nucleon spin. Using the MIT bag model, we estimate spectator effects through the presence of the gluon vector potential in the definitions of the quark orbital angular momentum.
