The structure-property relationship of the nanopeapods-one dimensional (1D) C{sub 60}O polymer encapsulated in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)-is studied by means of the self-consistent field crystal orbital method. The calculations show that the nearest distance between the two constituents is within Van der Waals interaction scope in the most stable two peapods. The SWCNT sizes affect not only the stability but also the electronic structures of the peapods. The peapods with larger tube diameters keep the semiconductive and metallic properties of the corresponding pristine SWCNTs. Electrochemical lithium ion storage property of C{sub 60} encapsulated single-walled carbon nanotubes

This is the first study to investigate the electrochemical Li ion insertion/deinsertion property of C{sub 60} encapsulated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) (C{sub 60}-peapods). It was found that the reversible Li ion storage capacity of the C{sub 60}-peapod per unit weight is about 1.2 times greater than that of the empty tubes. This suggests that one peapod tube can store almost 1.7 times more reversible Li ions compared to one empty SWCNT tube.

Properties of K,Rb-intercalated C{sub 60} encapsulated inside carbon nanotubes called peapods derived from nuclear magnetic resonance

We present a detailed experimental study on how magnetic and electronic properties of Rb,K-intercalated C{sub 60} encapsulated inside carbon nanotubes called peapods can be derived from {sup 13}C nuclear magnetic resonance investigations. Ring currents do play a basic role in those systems; in particular, the inner cavities of nanotubes offer an ideal environment to investigate the magnetism at the nanoscale. We report the largest diamagnetic shifts down to −68.3 ppm ever observed in carbon allotropes, which is connected to the enhancement of the aromaticity of the nanotube envelope upon intercalation. Electronic structure of alkali and alkali-earth doped solid C{sub 60}

First, the electronic structure of superconducting alkali-doped solid C{sub 60} (A{sub 3}C{sub 60} = K{sub 3}C{sub 60} Rb{sub 3}C{sub 60}, and Na{sub 2}CsC{sub 60}) obtained by using the local-density approximation in the density-functional theory will be reviewed with emphasis on their Fermi-level density of states, and will be compared to the experimental results. Low-frequency excitations of C{sub 60} chains inserted inside single-walled carbon nanotubes

The low-frequency excitations of C{sub 60} chains inserted inside single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering on a high-quality sample of peapods. The comparison of the neutron-derived generalized phonon density of states (GDOS) of the peapods sample with that of raw SWNTs allows the vibrational properties of the C{sub 60} chains encapsulated in the hollow core of the SWNTs to be probed. Lattice dynamical models are used to calculate the GDOS of chains of monomers, dimers, and polymers inserted into SWNTs, which are compared to the experimental data.
