Neutron-diffraction and inelastic-scattering experiments are used to investigate in detail the field dependence of the magnetic structure and low-energy spin-wave spectrum of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya helimagnet Ba{sub 2}CuGe{sub 2}O{sub 7}. The results suggest that the previously proposed model for the magnetism of this compound (an ideal sinusoidal spin spiral, stabilized by isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) needs to be refined. Both recent and previously published data can be quantitatively explained by taking into account the Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony term, a special magnetic anisotropy term that was predicted to always accompany Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in insulators. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Study of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, spin–orbit torque, and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction in the heavy metal/CoFeB bilayers with Ir₂₂ Mn₇₈ insertion

The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), current-induced spin–orbit torques (SOTs), and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) in the as-grown W or Ta/Ir₂₂Mn₇₈(IrMn)/CoFeB/MgO stacks with varying IrMn layer thicknesses were investigated. The in-plane magnetized W/CoFeB/MgO sample becomes perpendicularly magnetized after inserting the IrMn layer without the requirement of the annealing process. The effective magnetization fields 4π_Meff show a nonmonotonic dependence on the IrMn layer thickness, which reaches the maximum in magnitude at a thickness of tIrMn = 0.75 nm. Single valence and structural order in the colossal-magnetoresistant pyrochlore Tl{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}O{sub 7}

Without Mn{sup 3+}/Mn{sup 4+} mixed-valence or Jahn-Teller distortions in the MnO{sub 6} octahedra, the origin of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in the pyrochlore Tl{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}O{sub 7} is thought to arise instead from superexchange with large incoherent scattering near the ferromagnetic transition. Using x-ray-absorption spectroscopy, we have shown that the electronic state of Tl is nearly identical to that in Tl{sub 2}O{sub 3}, indicating doping into the Tl6s bands, that there is no appreciable Mn mixed valence, and that the MnO{sub 6} octahedra are well ordered.
