Transfer and surface vibration couplings in the fusion of {sup 40}Ca+{sup 46,48,50}Ti at near-barrier energies

Fusion and quasielastic excitation functions were measured for {sup 40}Ca+{sup 46,48,50}Ti at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. The interest in these systems lies in the opposite target-mass dependence of surface vibration couplings and neutron-transfer couplings. The cross sections were measured at small energy steps and with high precision, so that the structure in the excitation functions (barrier distributions) could be revealed through a differentiation process. The subbarrier fusion data show a larger enhancement with increasing target mass number, which clearly indicates the importance of transfer couplings. Fusion of the positive Q-value system {sup 36}S+{sup 48}Ca well below the Coulomb barrier

The fusion excitation function of {sup 36}S+{sup 48}Ca has been measured from well above the barrier down to very small cross sections at sub-barrier energies. A steady decrease of the fusion cross sections is observed below the barrier with no pronounced change of slope. The logarithmic derivative saturates and does not reach the value expected for a constant astrophysical S-factor. The S-factor does not show any maximum in the measured energy range. Coupled-channels calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential have been performed.

Fusion barrier distributions extracted from cross section measurements on the systems {sup 40}Ca + {sup 192}Os, {sup 194}Pt

Fusion cross sections were measured spanning the barrier region for the systems {sup 40}Ca + {sup 192}Os and {sup 40}Ca + {sup 194}Pt. The excitation function is then multiplied by E and differentiated twice with respect to energy to yield the distribution of barriers associated with fusion for each system. The resulting distributions are compared with the characteristic shapes expected to result from the prolate/oblate quadrupole deformity of the targets. Spherical {sup 40}Ca was chosen to minimize the effects due to the projectile while enhancing the barrier splitting due to the shape deformation of the targets.
Fusion near and below the barrier for the systems /sup 32,34/S+/sup 24,25,26/Mg and /sup 32/S+/sup 27/Al

Excitation functions are reported for total fusion near and below the Coulomb barrier of the systems /sup 32,34/S+/sup 24,25,26/Mg and /sup 27/Al. The data cannot be reproduced by one-dimensional barrier penetration calculations. The enhancement of the cross sections at low energies is compared to predictions of models taking into acount the static deformation or zero point vibration of the reaction partners. Calculations including zero point motion do not reproduce the observed variations of the measured cross sections with respect to the neutron number of target and projectile.
