New transitions and levels in {sup 148}Ce have been observed in a {gamma}-{gamma}-{gamma} coincidence study from the spontaneous fission of {sup 252}Cf with Gammasphere detector array. The ground band has been extended up to I{sup {pi}}=22{sup +}, and side bands are extended with {delta}I=2 stretched transitions and {delta}I=1 crossing transitions. The observed level scheme is interpreted in terms of possible octupole correlations. Two sets of interwined positive- and negative- parity bands with the simplex quantum numbers s={+-}1 are suggested. The results of B(E1)/B(E2) branching ratios indicate that the octupole correlations in {sup 148}Ce are strong.

First observation of collective rotational bands in neutron-rich ¹⁴²La and the study of octupole/triaxial deformations in ^142,143La

Collective rotational bands were observed for the first time in neutron-rich odd–odd ¹⁴²La by means of γ-γ-γ and γ-γ-γ-γ coincidence measurements of prompt fission γ rays from ²⁵²Cf using multi-detector array Gammasphere. Similarity between the yrast band of ¹⁴²La and those of neighboring ¹⁴⁴La, ¹⁴⁴Ce was found and interpreted as quasiparticle excitations. Here, PES calculations suggested triaxial deformation for the ground state of 142La. Considerable triaxial and near zero octupole deformations were deduced for the yrast band of ¹⁴²La by the TRS model calculations. High spin states in neutron-rich odd-{ital Z} {sup 143,145}Ba nuclei have been investigated from the study of prompt {gamma} rays in the spontaneous fission of {sup 252}Cf by using {gamma}-{gamma}- and {gamma}-{gamma}-{gamma}- coincidence techniques. Alternating parity bands are identified for the first time in {sup 145}Ba and extended in {sup 143}Ba. A new side band, with equal, constant dynamic, and kinetic moments of inertia equal to the rigid body value, as found in superdeformed bands, is discovered in {sup 145}Ba.
