Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data for the tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP)-n-octane, HNO{sub 3}-Th(NO{sub 3}){sub 4} solvent extraction system, obtained under a variety of experimental conditions, have been interpreted using two different models. The particle growth model led to unrealistic results. The Baxter model for hard-spheres with surface adhesion, on the other hand, was more successful. The theory, which expresses the free energy of an arbitrary mixture as a functional of the composition density of an infinitely polydisperse (IP) reference, is used to evaluate the properties of mixtures of hard spheres constrained to the Wigner--Seitz cells of an fcc lattice. Fundamental measure density functional theory studies on the freezing of binary hard-sphere and Lennard-Jones mixtures

Free energies and correlation functions of liquid and solid hard-sphere (HS) mixtures are calculated using the fundamental measure density functional theory. Using the thermodynamic perturbation theory the free energies of solid and liquid Lennard-Jones (LJ) mixtures are obtained from correlation functions of HS systems within a single theoretical approach. The resulting azeotrope- and spindle-type solid-liquid phase diagrams of HS and LJ binary mixtures are in good agreement with the corresponding ones from computer simulations.

Free Energy Calculations of Crystalline Hard Sphere Complexes Using Density Functional Theory

Recently developed fundamental measure density functional theory (FMT) is used to study binary hard sphere (HS) complexes in crystalline phases. By comparing the excess free energy, pressure and phase diagram, we show that the fundamental measure functional yields good agreements to the available simulation results of AB, AB₂ and AB₁₃ crystals. Additionally, we use this functional to study the HS models of five binary crystals, Cu₅Zr(C15_b), Cu₅₁Zr₁₄(β), Cu₁₀Zr₇(φ), CuZr(B2) and CuZr₂ (C11_b), which are observed in the Cu-Zr system.
