Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Low-Density Al_20+xCr_20-xMo_20-yTi₂₀V_20+y Alloys

Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) Al_20+xCr_20-xMo_20-yTi₂₀V_20+y ((x, y) = (0, 0), (0, 10), and (10, 15)) were computationally studied to obtain a low density and a better mechanical property. The density functional theory (DFT) method was employed to compute the structural and mechanical properties of the alloys, based on a large unit cell model of randomly distributed elements. Debye–Grüneisen theory was used to study the thermal properties of Al_20+xCr_20-xMo_20-yTi₂₀V_20+y. The phase diagram calculation shows that all three RHEAs have a single body-centered cubic (BCC) structure at high temperatures ranging from 1000 K to 2000 K. Simultaneous static measurements of pressure, volume, temperature, and sound velocity are reported in deuterium fluid in the range 75 less than or equal to T less than or equal to 300K and 2 less than or equal to P less than or equal to 20 kbar (0.2 to 2.0 GPa). The molar volume and ultrasonic velocity of fluid n-D/sub 2/ as a function of pressure at constant temperature were measured simultaneously in a piston--cylinder apparatus over the range 75 less than or equal to T less than or equal to 300/sup 0/K and 2 less than P less than 20 kbar. A total of 1340 data sets along 33 isotherms were obtained with an average deviation of 0.4 percent both in volume and ultrasonic velocity.
