Textured superconducting films of YbBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} were grown on single crystals of MgO (100) and SrTiO{sub 3} (100) by oxidation of a liquid alloy precursor. The substrates were coated by dipping them in molten YbBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3} (m.p. {similar to}870 {degree}C). After removal from the melt, the liquid layers on the substrates were oxidized in pure oxygen to form the tetragonal oxide phase, i.e., YbBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}}, then annealed at 500 {degree}C to obtain the superconducting orthorhombic phase of the same compound. Softening of Cu-O vibrational modes as a precursor to onset of superconductivity in EuBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/. sqrt. /sub delta/

T-dependent /sup 119/Sn Mossbauer Debye-Waller factor f(T) in EuBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 2.98/Sn/sub 0.02/O/sub 7/..sqrt../sub delta/ displays evidence of a substantial softening in lattice vibrations at Tless than or equal to110 K. In a previous /sup 151/Eu study, no detectable softening in f(T) was found at the rare-earth site. These results taken together show that Sn atoms as a dilute impurity replace predominantly Cu(1) sites in the Cu-O chains of the orthorhombic structure. It appears that a softening in vibrational modes localized onto the Cu-O linear chains occurs as a precursor to the onset of superconductivity. These results show that phonons domore »« less

Spin-reorientation transition of Ni/Cu(100) and CO/Ni/Cu(100): Separation of the surface and bulk components of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectrum

The spin-reorientation transition of Ni/Cu(100) and CO/Ni/Cu(100) films was investigated with the depth-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) technique. The XMCD spectra from the surface and inner layers were separately extracted. As for the bare Ni films, the in-plane orbital magnetic moment in the surface layer is significantly enhanced. In contrast, the inner layers exhibit larger perpendicular orbital magnetic moment than the in-plane one. Upon CO adsorption, the surface magnetization is drastically reduced, while the inner layers are unaffected. These results directly explain the spin-reorientation transition in Ni/Cu(100) and CO/Ni/Cu(100)

Superconducting Tl--Ca--Ba--Cu--oxide films have been prepared on yttria stabilized zirconia substrates via the reaction of Tl{sub 2}O vapor with precursor Ca--Ba--Cu--oxide films prepared by the spray pyrolysis of a solution of the metal nitrates. The vapor reaction process, evaluated in both air and oxygen ambients, was carried out in a two-zone reactor which permitted the independent control of the temperatures of the sample and of a boat containing thallium oxide. Observation of a Tamm-type state on Cu/sub 0. 9/Al/sub 0,1/(100) surface: Disorder effects and bulk electronic structure of alloy

The electronic structure of a Cu/sub 0.9/Al/sub 0.1/ (100) single crystal has been studied with use of an angle-resolved photoemission technique. An intrinsic Tamm-type surface state is found to exist in the disordered alloy. The linewidth of the surface state is analyzed to deduce the disorder-induced smearing of energy levels. These and other experimental results are discussed in terms of the computed band structure of the alloy on the basis of coherent potential approximation applied to a realistic muffin-tin Hamiltonain.
