Several steps of an investigation of single top-quark production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are discussed. A number of general problems associated with basic steps of this analysis are discussed. The investigations are performed for the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid detector) Collaboration, and detailed results will be presented in CMS publications. Three event generators used by the CMS Collaboration in simulating single top-quark production (SingleTop, MC-NLO, and a generator based on the MadGraph package) are compared in the present study. Schemes for optimizing the observation of a single top quark on the basis of the neural-network method are presented.more »« less

Single-top-quark production in the tW{sup {plus_minus}} channel and Higgs boson signals via H{r_arrow}W{sup +}W{sup {minus}} at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

In a recent study by Dittmar and Dreiner it was shown that with appropriate selection cuts the signature of events containing two charged leptons and missing energy represents the best chance of detecting the standard model Higgs scalar in the mass range between 155 and 180 GeV, the primary decay of the Higgs boson being into pairs of charged gauge bosons. The largest background to this channel is due to irreducible W{sup +}W{sup {minus}}X production. Associated production of the top-pions and single top at hadron colliders

In the context of topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) models, we study the production of the top-pions {pi}{sub t}{sup 0,{+-}} with single top quark via the processes pp{yields}t{pi}{sub t}{sup 0}+X and pp{yields}t{pi}{sub t}{sup {+-}}+X, and discuss the possibility of detecting these new particles at Tevatron and LHC. We find that it is very difficult to observe the signals of these particles via these processes at Tevatron, while the neutral and charged top-pions {pi}{sub t}{sup 0} and {pi}{sub t}{sup {+-}} can be detecting via considering the same sign top pair ttc event and the ttb (or ttb) event at LHC, respectively.

Strong and electroweak supersymmetric corrections to single top processes at the Large Hadron Collider

We present the one-loop corrections originating from QCD and electroweak interactions of supersymmetric origin within the minimal supersymmetric standard model to the single-top processes bq{yields}tq{sup '} and qq{sup '}{yields}tb. We illustrate their impact on top quark observables accessible at the LHC in the ''t+jet'' final state, such as total cross section, several differential distributions, and left-right plus forward-backward asymmetries. We find that in many instances these effects can be observable for planned LHC energies and luminosities, quite large as well as rather sensitive to several minimal supersymmetric standard model parameters.

CP violation in the associated production of a charged Higgs boson with a top quark at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We explore the CP violation in the charged Higgs production associated with a top quark at the LHC in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The supersymmetric phases of gaugino masses and trilinear A terms lead to a CP violation of the cross section in the pp{yields}gb{yields}tH{sup {+-}} process through loop corrections to the tbH{sup {+-}} vertex. We find that more than 10% of CP violating asymmetry is possible when the charged Higgs boson is heavy enough.
