A computer simulation study has been performed of the reaction paths for the precipitation of {delta}{prime} (Al{sub 3}Li) ordered particles from a disordered matrix ({alpha}) in Al-Li alloys, using microscopic Langevin diffusion equations. It is found that the precipitation of {delta}{prime} occurs either by a congruent ordering process followed by decomposition, or by a non-classical nucleation mechanism which requires critical fluctuations of both composition and order parameter, except in a narrow range of compositions near the equilibrium phase boundary of the disordered phase, where classical nucleation theory seems to be applicable. Electronic structure and phase stability properties of Al-Li alloys

Recently, the phase diagram of Al--Li alloys was calculated with the use of the Connolly-Williams method. In an effort to test the validity and to supplement the results of that study, equilibrium lattice constants and effective cluster interactions have been obtained using the generalized perturbation method within the first-principles multiple-scattering formalism of the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential approximation. The implication of these effective interactions to the phase stability of these alloys is discussed. 15 refs., 4 figs.

Formation of an ordered intermetallic phase from a disordered solid solution -- A study using first-principles calculations in Al-Li alloys

The formation of the ordered L1{sub 2} phase in Al-Li binary solid solutions has been studied using first-principles electronic structure calculations in conjunction with the static concentration wave model. The effective multisite interactions have been determined by using Connolly-Williams prescription in the tetrahedron-octahedron (TO) cluster approximation for the f.c.c. lattice. The resulting Landau plots (free energy versus order parameter) have pointed out the temperatures below which instabilities with respect to ordering develops. Effect of MnO on the microstructures, phase stability and mechanical properties of ceria-partially-stabilized zirconia (Ce-TZP) and Ce-TZP-Al sub 2 O sub 3 composites

Effect of increasing amounts of MnO additions on the microstructures, phase stability and mechanical properties of ZrO{sub 2}-12 m% CeO{sub 2} and ZrO{sub 2}-12 m% CeO{sub 2}-10 w% Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} were studied. MnO suppressed grain growth in ZrO{sub 2}-12 m% CeO{sub 2}, while enhancing the mechanical properties significantly (strength=557 MPa, fracture toughness=9.3 MPa.(m){sup 1/2} at 0.2 w% MnO). The enhanced mechanical properties were achieved despite an increased stability of the tetragonal phase as evidenced by a lower burst transformation temperature (M{sub b}) and a reduced volume fraction of the monoclinic phase on the fracture surface.
