The dispersion of the band-gap edge states in bulk topological insulators Bi{sub 2}Te{sub 3} and Bi{sub 2}Se{sub 3} is considered within density functional theory. The dependences of this dispersion both on the approximation used for an exchange-correlation functional at fixed unit cell parameters and atomic positions and on these parameters and positions that are obtained upon structural relaxation performed using a certain approximated functional are analyzed. The relative position of the Dirac point of topologically protected surface states and the valence band maximum in the surface electronic structure of the topological insulators is discussed.

One of the most fundamental and exotic properties of 3D topological insulators (TIs) is spin-momentumlocking (SML) of their topological surface states (TSSs), promising for potential applications in future spintronics. However, other possible conduction channels, such as a trivial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with strong Rashba type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and bulk conducting states that may possess a spin Hall effect (SHE), can coexist in 3D TIs, making determining the origin of the current induced spin polarization (CISP) difficult. The effect of an ultrathin Pb film deposited on the surface of Bi{sub 2}Se{sub 3} and Sb{sub 2}Te{sub 3} compounds on the electronic state structure of topological insulators is studied experimentally by the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique. The following features are revealed: formation of two-dimensional quantum-well states in the near-surface region, an increase in the binding energy of the Dirac cone and the core levels, and a simultaneous electronic states intensity redistribution in the system in photoemission spectra. Standard time-domain THz spectroscopy (TDTS) in a transmission geometry was performed with a custom home-built THz spectrometer. In this technique an approximately single-cycle picosecond pulse of light is transmitted through the sample and the substrate. The complex transmission is obtained from Fourier transforming the time-domain sample pulse and ratioing it to a Fourier transformed substrate pulse.

Observation of cyclotron resonance and electron-phonon coupling in surface states of the bulk-insulating topological insulator Cu_0.02Bi₂Se₃

We have utilized magneto-optical time-domain spectroscopy to investigate the low frequency optical response of topological insulator Cu_0.02Bi₂Se₃ and Bi₂Se₃ films. With both field and frequency depedence, such experiments give sufficient information to measure the mobility and carrier density of multiple conduction channels simultaneously. We observe sharp cyclotron resonances (CRs) in both samples. The small amount of Cu substitution into the Cu_0.02Bi₂Se₃ induces a true bulk insulator with only a single conduction channel with total sheet carrier density 4.9 x 10¹²/cm² and mobility as large as 4000 cm²/V s.
