Investigation of {sup 246}Fm : in-beam spectroscopy at the limits

The structure of {sup 246}Fm has been investigated using in-beam {gamma}-ray spectroscopy. The experiment was performed at the University of Jyvaeskylae using JUROGAM 2 coupled to RITU and GREAT. The {sup 246}Fm nuclei were produced using a 186 MeV beam of {sup 40}Ar impinging on a target of {sup 208}Pb. JUROGAM 2 was fully instrumented with TNT2D digital acquisition cards. The use of digital acquisition cards and a rotating target allowed for unprecedented beam intensities up to 71 particle-nanoamperes for prompt {gamma}-ray spectroscopy. Fragment mass and kinetic-energy distributions from spontaneous fission of the neutron-deficient isotopes, 1. 2-s /sup 246/Fm and 38-s /sup 248/Fm

We have measured the mass and kinetic-energy distributions for fragments from the spontaneous fission of 1.2-s /sup 246/Fm and 38-s /sup 248/Fm. The mass distributions are highly asymmetric and the average total kinetic energies of 199 +- 4 MeV and 198 +- 4 MeV, respectively, are consistent with systematics for lower Z actinides. Their properties are in contrast to those of /sup 258/Fm and /sup 259/Fm, whose spontaneous fission results in narrowly symmetric mass distributions accompanied by unusually high total kinetic energies.

Absolute IR intensities of the. nu. sub 1 bands of HN sub 2 sup + and HCO sup + determined by direct laser absorption spectroscopy in fast ion beams

The authors report the determination of absolute integrated band intensities (S{sub v}{sup 0}) for the {nu}{sub 1} fundamental bands of HN{sub 2}{sup +} and HCO{sup +} by the recently developed technique of direct laser absorption spectroscopy in fast ion beams. The values obtained for HN{sub 2}{sup +} (1,250 (300) cm{sup {minus}2} atm{sup {minus}1}) and HCO{sup +} (430 (100) cm{sup {minus}2} atm{sup {minus}1}) are substantially lower than corresponding results from high level ab initio calculations.
