The Department of Energy is planning a comprehensive Fundamental Review of its classification policy to ensure it fits today's world. The objective is to identify what information continues to require protection from potential adversaries, terrorists, and proliferants, while making all other information promptly available to the public.

Specifically

A comprehensive Fundamental Review of Department of Energy classification policy will be carried out by a group of recognized experts in nuclear weapons-related technology and related policy matters, including defense, safety, nonproliferation, and intelligence considerations. The views of the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and other Government agencies will be included as appropriate. This review will result in a report within about 12 months giving recommendations to the Secretary of Energy. A report will be made available for review and comment by stakeholders outside the Department.
