DISPERSION OF RADIOACTIVE OR CHEMICAL CONTAMINANTS INTRODUCED INTO, GROUND-WATER AQUIFERS REDUCES THE MAXIMUM CONCENTRATION OF THE CONTAM-, INANT WHILE SPREADING THE CONTAMINANT IN A LARGER VOLUME OF GROUND-, WATER AQUIFER. THE DEGREE OF DISPERSION IN DESERT ALLUVIUM, THE MEDIUM, IN WHICH MANY UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS ARE CONDUCTED, IS, PRESENTLY UNKNOWN. THE PRIME OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO FIELD TEST , THEORETICAL AND LABORATORY MODELS DESCRIBING TWO-DIMENSIONAL, DISPERSION OF A CONTAMINANT DURING FLOW THROUGH POROUS MEDIA AND TO, DERIVE A COEFFICIENT OF DISPERSIONREPRESENTATIVE OF DESERT ALLUVIUM., A FIELD SITE WAS SELECTED TO STUDY DISPERSION. THE SITEWAS DEVELOPED, FOR TRACING GROUND-WATER FLOW UNDER ESSENTIALLY UNDISTURBED HYDRO-, GEOLOGIC CONDITIONS. AS PART OF SITE DEVELOPMENT, HYDROGEOLOGY AND, HYDRAULICS OF THE SITE WERE INVESTIGATED. THE STUDY SITE APPEARS TO, MEET THE CRITERIA FOR FIELD DETERMINATION OF THE COEFFICIENT OF, DISPERSION. PRELIMINARY RESULTS INDICATE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER, VELOCITIES THAN EXPECTED FOR A SHALLOW ALLUVIAL AQUIFER. MEASURED, GROUND-WATER FLOW VELOCITIES RANGE FROM 2.5 TO 6.4 METERS PER DAY FROM, TWO TRACER STUDIES. GROUND-WATER FLOW DIRECTION AT THE SITE IS TO THE , SOUTH-SOUTHWEST. PRELIMINARY RESULTS INDICATE A SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER , RATE OF LATERAL DISPERSION THAN PRESENT THEORY WOULD PREDICT.
