Description/Abstract:
TEST ELEMENTS CONTAINING TAMPED URANIUM DIOXIDE POWDER OF RELATIVELY LOW DENSITY WERE IRRADIATED AT SURFACE HEAT FLUXES EXCEEDING 700,000 BTU HR-1FT-2 AND WITH AN APPRECIABLE PART OF THE FUEL ABOVE THE MELTING POINT. FORMATION OF LARGE, COLUMNAR, RADIALLY ORIENTED GRAINS OF UO2 OCCURRED IN THE HIGH TEMPERATURE REGIONS BELOW THE MELTING POINT.
