Description/Abstract:
GREASEWOOD SHRUBS INCREASE EXCHANGEABLE NA, K, AND PH OF SOIL BENEATH THEIR CANOPIES. THE PATTERN OF SOIL PH CORRESPONDED GENERALLY TO THE OUTLINE OF SHRUB CANOPIES. THE CIRCULAR PATTERN OF SHRUB CANOPY AND THE PH PATTERN WAS SKEWED TO THE DOWNWIND SIDE. SOIL MOISTURE PENETRATION IN WINTER WAS LESS DEEP BENEATH SHRUB CANOPIES THAN IN ADJACENT INTERSHRUB AREAS. ABOUT 1/5 OF THE AVAILABLE MOISTURE WAS INTERCEPTED BY SHRUB CANOPIES AND LITTER.
