Description/Abstract:
SURVIVAL OF RATS AFTER FRACTIONATED WHOLE-BODY X-IRRADIATION WITH INDIVIDUAL DOSES UP TO 500 R WAS NOT LIMITED BY INTESTINAL DAMAGE, NOR WAS IT INCREASED APPRECIABLY BY PRETREATMENT WITH CYSTEINE. PROTECTION OF HEMATOPOIETIC TISSUE BY SHIELDING THE THORACIC REGION OR BY SHIELDING ALL OF THE BODY, EXCEPT THE ABDOMEN, INCREASED SURVIVAL SO THE RESISITANCE OF THE INTESTINE TO PROTRACTED RADIAITON COULD BE STUDIED. CYSTEINE PROPHYLAXIS, IN THE PRESENCE OF PARTIAL-BODY SHIELDING, CAUSED A DOSE REDUCTION FACTOR OF ABOUT 2 IN DECREASING INTESTINAL DAMAGE AND INCREASING SURVIVAL FROM SEMI-WEEKLY X-IRRADIATION.
