Description/Abstract:
COMMERCIAL GRADE PYROLYTIC GRAPHITE (DENSITY 2.20 G/CM3) WAS IRRADIATED AT 650 C TO EXPOSURES OF 3.2 AND 6.0 N/CM-2 (E GREATER THAN 0.18 MEV) SUCCESSIVELY. CHANGES IN LENGTH AND IN COEFFICIENT OF THERMAL EXPANSION WITH IRRADIATION ARE GIVEN. IT APPEARS THAT IRRADIATION INTERCALATES C COMPLEXES BETWEEN THE LAYER PLANES. RESULTS IMPLY THAT HIGH-TEMP RADIATION-INDUCED CONTRACTION IN POLYCRYSTALLINE GRAPHITES OCCUR EITHER BY DECREASING THE POROSITY OR BY DENSIFYING C WHICH WAS INITIALLY LESS THAN THEORETICAL DENSITY, NOT BY A VOL CONTRACTION IN THE GRAPHITE CRYSTALLITES.
