Description/Abstract:
THE PU239 AND PU241 FISSION CROSS SECTIONS WERE MEASURED RELATIVE TO THE 1/V BORON CROSS SECTION USING A THIN WINDOW PARALLEL PLATE IONIZATION CHAMBER CONTAINING FOILS OF BORON, PU239 AND PU241. TOTAL CROSS SECTION RESULTS IN THE LOW ENERGY REGION ARE TABULATED FOR U235, CU AND IR. BUCKLING MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE WITH 1.6% ENRICHED U-WATER MODERATED SYSTEMS TO DETERMINE CRITICAL MASSES FOR NUCLEAR SAFETY SPECIFICATINS. BUCKLINGS OF 1.44% ENRICHED SLUGS IN A RANDOM ARRAY AND 1.0% ENRICHED SLUGS IN UNIFORM LATTICES ARE TABULATED. THE INFINITE MEDIUM, THERMAL NEUTRON MILTIPLICATION FACTOR, K INFINITE, WAS OBTAINED EXPERIMENTALLY FOR A D2O-MODERATED, AIR-COOLED UNIT CELL (SUPERCELL) WHICH IS ACTUALLY A CONFIGURATION OF SEVEN FUEL ASSEMBLIES HAVING AN 8 INCH SPACING. THE CENTRAL COLUMN OF THE SUPERCELL CONTAINS A 19-ROD CLUSTER OF AL-PU FUEL ELEMENTS AND IS SURROUNDED BY SIX NEAREST NEIGHBORS OF 19-ROD UO2 FUEL ELEMENTS. MEASUREMENTS OF THE INFINITE MULTIPLICATION FACTOR, K INFINITE, AND THE THERMAL UTILIZATION FACTOR, F, OF D2O MODERATED LATTICES WERE MADE ONA UO2 FUEL ELEMENT CONSISTING OF A CENTRAL ROD AND TWO CONCENTRIC ANNULI OF FUWL. RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR AN 8 INCH TRIANGULAR LATTICE, WITH AIR, DWO, AND H2O COOLANTS. A SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS TO DETERMINE THE FAST FISSION FACTOR, THE RESONANCE ESCAPE PROBABILITY, AND THE INTIAL CONVERSION RATIO FOR A REPRESENTATIVE PHYSICAL CONTSTANTS TESTING REACTOR (PCTR) LATTICE WERE COMPLETED. THE LATTICE INVESTIGATED HAD AN 8 INCH TRIANGULAR SPACING WITH D2O MODERATOR AND COOLANT. THE FUEL CLUSTERS CONTAINED 19 HALF INCH RODS OF NATURAL UO2. NEW MEASUREMENTS OF THE INFINITE MULTIPLICATION FACTOR K INFINITE OF A 7 1/2 INCH GRAPHITE AND NAUTURAL U LATTICE WERE COMPLETED IN THE PCTR.
