INTITIAL COLD CLEAN CONVERSION RATIO INCREASES OF UP TO 1.5% AND COLD CLEAN REACTIVITY INCREASES OF UP TO 4.2 MK (APPROX. 180IH) CAN BE ACHIEVED IN THE OLD PILES BY REPLACING THE PRESENT 62.5 MIL AL TUBES WITH 40 MIL ZIRCALOY TUBES AND INCREASING THE DIAMETER OF THE SOLID SLUG CORE BY 45 MILS. IN THE CASE OF I&E SLUGS, THE MAXIMUM INCREASES ARE COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF THE SOLID SLUG, BUT DEPENDS ON THE RAIO OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COOLANT VOLUME. IT IS POSSIBLE WITH ENLARGED I&E SLUGS TO CANCEL OUT THE REACTIVITY LOSS RESULTING FROM THE CHANGE FROM SOLID TO I&E LOAD.
