TEST COUPONS OF 1020 C STEEL, CORTEN STEEL, AND MAYARI-R WERE SUSPENDED IN THE WASTE STORAGE FACILITIES; HALF IN THE LIQUID PHASE AND HALF IN THE VAPOR PHASE OF THE TANKS. THE COUPONS WERE LEFT ONE YEAR AND THEN SENT FOR EXAMINATION. IN THE VAPOR PHASE THE PERCENT WEIGHT LOSS IN DESCENDING ORDER OF SEVERITY WERE 1020 C STEEL, CORTEN STEEL, MAYARI-R STEEL AND WELD METAL. PIT PENETRATION WAS GREATEST IN THE CORTEN STEEL AND LEAST IN THE 1020 C STEEL,. LIQUID PHASE COUPONS INDICATED LEAST LOSS IN CORTEN STEEL FOLLOWED BY 1020 C STEEL AND WELD METAL WITH MAYARI-R SHOWING THE GREATEST LOSS.
