Description/Abstract:
THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF OXIDE STRINGERS PER LINEAR INCH OF CLADDING FOR THE 3 SAMPLES FROM FUEL ELEMENT 3Q WAS 220 WITH A RANGE OF 100-300. THE MAXIMUM OBSERVED DEPTH OF OXIDE STRINGER PENETRATION INTO THE CLADDING WAS 0.0016" ON SAMPLE 1-M. MICROSCOPIC THICKNESS MEASUREMENTS SHOWED A DECREASE IN OVERALL FUEL ELEMENT THICKNESS; THE AVERAGE BEING 0.1008" LESS THAN THE NOMINAL VALUE OF 0.021". AN INDICATION OF THERMALLY INDUCED GRAING GROWTH. INCOMPLETE BLENDING OF THE NICHROME AND UO2 PARTICLES WAS OBSERVED AT SEVERAL PLACES IN THE FUEL ELEMENT.
