RU VOLATILIZATION INCREASES WITH INCREASING HNO3 CONCN AND REACHES A PLATEAU AT ACID CONCNS OF ABOUT 8 TO 10 MOLAR. ONLY ABOUT 1 TO 2 % OF THE RU IS VOLATILIZED. MILD REDUCING AGENTS SUCH AS NITROUS ACID, NITROGEN DIOXIDE, AND A 30% TBP-SOLTROL 170 MIXTURE SUPPRESS THE VOLATILIZATION OF RU FROM HNO3. IN THE ABSENCE OF AIR RU DISTILLS FROM HNO3 AS RUO4. IN THE PRESENCE OF AIR AN UNIDENTIFIED RU SPECIES APPEARS IN THE DISTILLATE.
