THE JOMINY END QUENCHING TECHNIQUE WAS APPLIED. FOR COOLING RATES RANGING FROM 0.002 TO 0.003 C/SECOND, IT WAS DETD THAT U HYDRIDE NUCLEATED PRIMARILY AT GRAIN BOUNDARIES EITHER AS DISCRETE PARTICLES OR IN CONJUNCTION WITH CARBIDE TYPE INCLUSIONS. THE SIZE OF THE HYDRIDE PPT INCREASED, AND THE NUMBER DECREASED, WITH DECREASING COOLING RATE. A HEAT TINTING TECHNIQUE WAS DEVELOPED FOR POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION OF THE HYDRIDE PPT.
