THESE ARE FUEL ELEMENTS THAT HAVE SUPPORTS INTEGRAL WITH OR ATTACHED TO THE JACKETS, THUS PERMITTING THE FUEL ELEMENT TO BE USED IN A SMOOTH BORE OR RIBBLESS PROCESS TUBE. CANDIDATE ELEMENTS WERE TEST EVALUATED TO DETERMINE (1) 313 BUILDING PROCESSING EASE (2) CORROSION SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE JACKET AT THE POINT OF PROJECTION ATTACHMENT (3) EFFECT OF ATTACHMENT METHODS ON FUEL ELEMENT BOND (4) AUTOCLAVE RUPTURE BEHAVIOR INRIBBED AND RIBBLESS PROCESS TUBES. CANDIDATES INCLUDED FUEL ELEMENTS WITH 1/4" STUDS AND 1" RIBS WELDED TO THE JACKET, WITH END COLLARS, IN CANS HAVING INTEGRAL FULL-LENGTH RIBS, AND LINERS USED WITH SMOOTH SURFACE FUEL ELEMENTS. DATA AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE PRESENTED.
