DISCUSSES THERMOMETER ELEMENT DESIGN AND LOCATION. RECOMMENDS (1) THE DIFFERENCE IN EFFECTIVENESS DUE TO LOCATION ON EITHER THE NOZZLE END OR THE CROSS HEADER END OF THE PIGTAIL IS INSIGNIFICANT AS LONG AS SELF-PRESSURIZING CRITICAL FLOW OCCURS DOWNSTREAM OF THE THERMOMETER ELEMENT (2) THE SHORTEST PERIOD THERMOMETER REASONABLY AVAILABLE SHOULD BE USED (3) ELEMENTS WITH A ONE SECOND RESPONSE ARE ONLY ABOUT 10% WORSE THAN AN INFINITELY FAST RESPONSE ELEMENT IN TERMS OF THE RATIO OF TRIP POWER TO INITIAL POWER (4) A SYSTEM HAVING THE TRIP CHARACTERISTICS OF AN INFINITELY FAST THERMOMETER SYSTEM CAN BE OBTAINED BY ADJUSTING THE PANELLIT GAGES TO BE SENSITIVE TO POWER CHANGES (5) THE PERFORMANCE OF ALL THESE SYSTEMS MAY BE IMPROVED BY DECREASING THE WATER TRANSIT TIME BETWEEN THE END OF THE SLUGS AND THE REAR NOZZLE.
