Description/Abstract:
INTERGRANULAR CORROSION ASSOCIATED WITH LOW EXPOSURE FAILURES HAD BEEN SIMULATED IN THE LABORATORY AT TEMPERATURE ABOVE 290 C. IT HAS NOT BEEN OBSERVED AT TEMPERATURES BELOW THAT AT WHICH BOILING OCCURS, UNDER CORRENT PILE PRESSURES. THE CAUSE OF THIS CORROSION IS THEREFORE LOCALIZED OVERHEATING, LEADING TO A VAPOR-PHASE REACTION. CORRISION RATE INCREASES WITH BOTH TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE.. THE AL ALLOY M-388, CONTG 1% N1, IS MORE RESISTANT TO INTERGRANULAR CORROSION THAN PRESENT CAN STOCK.
