Description/Abstract:
A TENSILE TESTING UNIT WHICH PERMITS TESTING OF HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE SPECIMENS AT TEMPERATURES UP TO 800 C (1475 F) IS DESCRIBED. A DIRECT OPTICAL STRAIN-MEASURING METHOD IS USED. THE OPTICAL STRIN-MEASURING UNIT, THE SPOT WELDING OF PT GAGE STRIPS TO THE SPECIMEN, AND THE VACUUM FURNACE AND VACUUM SYSTEM DEVELOPED ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. A COMPARISON OF STRAIN-MEASURING METHODS AND STRESS STRAIN CURVES OBTAINED FOR 347 STAINLESS STEEL ARE INCLUDED.
