A METHOD OF CALCULATING CORROSION RATES OF HAPO FUEL ELEMENTS FROM SURFACE TEMP, LOCAL POWER AND EXPOSURE TIME IS PRESENTED. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IN-PILE AND OUT-OR-PILE CORROSION RATES IS A CONSEQUENCE OF INCREASES AL SURFACE TEMPS RESULTING FROM THE HEAT TRANSFER THROUGH THE CORROSION PRODUCT FILM ON THE FUEL ELEMENT.
