DESCRIBES AN EXPT PERFORMED IN THE HANFORD TEST PILE TO STUDY INCREASE IN NEUTRON SELF SHIELDING DUE TO MELTING AND COLLAPSING OF HOLLOW SLUGS. RESULTS ARE INTERPRETED IN TERMS OF REACTOR REACTIVITY IN VARIOUS LATTICE CONFIGURATIONS. COMPARISON WITH PREVIOUS EXPT IS MADE AND USE AS A SAFETY FUSE IS DISCUSSED
